Burning firewood in a wood stove or fireplace insert is more efficient and usually safer than burning wood in an open fireplace. When burning wood in an open fireplace, a great deal of heat (from combustion and from your living space) escapes up the chimney, along with soot and other harmful combustion byproducts. A wood stove or fireplace insert that has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will burn cleaner and more completely, producing more warmth from a given amount of firewood.

Dr. Energy Saver products are EPA certified and guaranteed to exceed home comfort and energy savings expectations. For proper installation and service second to none, contact your local Dr. Energy Saver and schedule a home energy audit!

Keys to safe, efficient wood stove operation

  • Buy a right-sized stove. Have an experienced wood stove dealer help you select the right EPA-certified model for your space.
  • If you don't cut your own firewood, buy it from a local supplier who harvests firewood sustainably.
  • Burn only dry, well-seasoned wood. Never burn green (unseasoned) wood, pressure-treated wood or household trash in your stove.
  • Make sure the stove is safely installed. Adhere to the clearances and specifications provided by the manufacturer. Make sure to have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a licensed chimney sweep at least once a year.
  • Consider installing ceiling fans to help distribute the air warmed by your stove.

No matter what type of heating system(s) you use, improve your home's overall energy efficiency by having an energy audit done by a Dr. Energy Saver dealer, and by making at least some of the improvements recommended as a result of the audit.
