Attic Roof Insulation

Attic Roof Insulation

A new thermal barrier. One way to insulate the attic roof is to install a continuous layer of rigid foam insulation directly beneath the rafters, as shown above.

Attic insulation is a key way to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient. The quality of the energy efficiency is based on the type of insulation used and where it is installed. This one-time investment will benefit your home for as long as you own the house. It's important to make the right decision when choosing your insulation and its placement.

Understand the options you have for attic roof insulation

When insulation is installed in your attic it usually goes in one of two places: on the attic floor or beneath the attic roof. However, when you are using your attic space as additional living space or a storage area it is important to use attic roof insulation, which is what we'll discuss here. These are the different insulation materials that can be used for attic roof insulation:

Fiberglass batt insulation: This form of insulation is typically installed between the rafters of the attic. An insulation baffle is usually installed against the underside of the roof sheathing in each rafter bay before the fiberglass batt is installed. This baffle will allow the attic to ventilate properly by connecting the soffit vent to the ridge vent.

Spray foam insulation: This insulation is most commonly applied to the space between attic rafters. This insulation strategy is controversial because it doesn't allow for ventilation space and it also can trap moisture in an attic, causing roof sheathing and rot.

Rigid foam insulation: This attic insulation is installed between and/or directly beneath the attic rafters and also allows for roof ventilation. Dr. Energy Saver's exclusive SuperAttic® also includes a radiant barrier paired with the insulation for additional energy savings. SuperAttic® is a tried-and-true insulation technique that provides the best overall value and performance.
