Built-in Air Conditioners

Window-mounted air conditioners and built-in air conditioners (also called in-wall and through-wall) are similar. The main difference is that a built-in is meant to be permanently installed and window-mounted units are usually removed after the cooling season is over.

Pros of built-in air conditioners

As a room-by-room air conditioning solution, many people prefer built-ins to window-mounted AC for several reasons. First of all, a through-wall units won't block the view through the window or require you to remove and store the appliance during the winter. If the room you're cooling has a window, you'll still be able to operate the window to take advantage of natural ventilation during mild weather.

A through-the-wall air conditioner can be installed in a wall that doesn't have a window; all you need is a rectangular framed opening. Built-in air conditioners are available in a wide range of sizes, including models designed to cool much larger spaces than portable window-mounted units can handle. However, larger in-wall AC units may require a dedicated electrical circuit or 230-volt wiring.

With most built-in air conditioners, the AC unit fits in a separate metal sleeve that is installed in a wall opening. The sleeve may come with the AC unit or be sold separately. Since it supports and protects the AC unit, the sleeve must be carefully installed so that it's secure and weather-tight.

Mini-split systems offer advantages over built-in air conditioners

Built-in air conditioners are not as popular these days because mini-split AC units provide the same room-by-room cooling capability in a more attractive wall-mounted package. With a mini-split system, only one or two small holes in the wall are required instead of a large opening. They are also much less expensive.
