Ductless AC systems are also referred to as "ductless mini-split" systems or "ductless mini-split heat pumps," when the system provides heating as well as air conditioning.
In a ductless AC system, the compressor/condenser unit is installed outside the house, while one or more small air handler units are permanently mounted on the wall or ceiling. Each air handler is supplied with electricity, refrigerant lines and a condensate drain line. A typical air handler has remote as well as console controls, and blows conditioned air into the room.
A ductless heat pump is a great option for homeowners who want the comfort and convenience of central air conditioning in a house that doesn't have a ductwork system. Since only small-diameter refrigerant lines need to be run through the wall of the house, system installation is usually fairly easy.
