In a ductless mini-split system, the air conditioner's compressor and condenser are located outside the house. The wall-mounted half of the system contains a cooling coil and a fan; it's sometimes referred to as the air handler. Refrigerant lines (supply and return) connect indoor and outdoor halves. The wall-mounted unit has no ducts; it simply blows conditioned air into the room.
This type of system has become very popular among homeowners who want central air conditioning but don't have existing ductwork running throughout the house. Like portable AC units, mini-split systems are rated according to BTU output. A wall-mounted air handler is intended to provide air conditioning for a single room, but some systems utilize a single outdoor compressor/condenser unit to supply more than one wall unit.
This AC option is definitely a step up from relying on window-mounted air conditioners to provide room-by-room cooling. A wall-mounted mini-split unit is quieter than a window-mounted unit; it won't block the view, detract from your home's appearance or require removal during winter months.
