Central Air Conditioning Repair
Correcting comfort problems. Cooling systems involve high-pressure refrigerants, pumps, fans and electronic controls. It’s best to have repairs performed by an experienced HVAC contractor.
A malfunction in your central air conditioning system can have a major impact on your comfort level. That's why most homeowners consider any AC system repair to be a fairly urgent issue.
For most central air conditioning repairs, you're going to have to call in a contractor. The fact that AC system repairs involve high-pressure fluids, electrical components and specialized tools - puts this work outside the realm of most DIYers.
However, there are definitely things that homeowners can do to improve the performance and longevity of a central air conditioning system.
Dr. Energy Saver can go over the things you can do at home to get the most out of your central AC while we make the needed repairs. Trust your local contractor to get started on your central air conditioning needs!
Here's a brief rundown of the most common problems that occur in a central AC system:
- Leaking refrigerant. The refrigerant in an air conditioner is supposed to circulate in a sealed system that doesn't leak or consume the material. If the system is low on refrigerant, it's always better to find and fix the leak than to keep adding refrigerant.
- Blower Fan problems. If the blower fan in an AC system's air handler isn't working, it might be because a fan belt is loose or broken. If this is the case, the fan's motor will run but the blower motor will turn slowly or not at all.
- Dirty coils. The evaporator coil in the air handler and the condensing coil in the system's outdoor unit need to be cleaned periodically to avoid the buildup of dirt that can severely hamper system performance.
- Burned-out compressor motor. Like any motor, the compressor motor for a central AC system can't last forever. But motor life is shortened when other parts of the system aren't properly maintained. Replacing the AC compressor motor is a fairly straightforward task for an HVAC technician.
- Blocked condensate drain. Air conditioning removes humidity from the air. When this airborne moisture condenses in the air handler, the resulting water must drain outside or to an interior drain line. If the condensate drain isn't cleaned out periodically, it can become blocked, possibly causing water damage or shutting down the system, if it's equipped with a drain pan and an automatic overflow switch.
- Leaky ductwork. This problem won't cause a system failure, but it can diminish the efficiency of a central air conditioning system by as much as 40%. An energy technician or an HVAC contractor will be able to tell if the ductwork needs sealing in order to eliminate energy-wasting air leaks.
