Video Transcript - SuperAttic™: Advanced Conversion System

Larry Janesky of Dr. Energy Saver; Question: Why are homes drafty and cold in the winter, then so hot in the summer especially in the upper levels?

The answer and secret to this problem lies in the attic and if you think about it, it's really logical and does make sense. Attics are vented so depending on the season they have either hot or cold air whisking through them.

So in the summer the sun heats your roof up to 140˚ or more then this heat will radiate down into the attic making it 130˚ or more in this space. In return the heat in the attic heats up your ceiling then radiates downward into the rooms in the upper levels causing them to become more hot and uncomfortable then the lower levels.

Also you have to remember many homes have the air conditioning system in the attic and what's connected to the unit, the ductwork. So now you have a cooling system in a baking environment trying to run cold air through the ducts which just doesn't make any sense. This causes the air conditioning system to constantly run and can't keep up with the demand for cooler air in the lower levels since its battling all the heat up there. For the homeowner this means your home will be more uncomfortable and your electricity bill is going to be much higher since you have the a/c unit running more then necessary.

We now have the answer to this problem "The SuperAttic™ Advance Conversion System"! What this superb system does is convert your attic from a vented one to an unvented attic while still maintaining a vented roof assembly. So the way we are able to do this is by installing our patented product SilverGlo™ to the bottom of your rafters, which are graphite infused foam insulation boards that have a radiant barrier on both sides.

Let's take a look at what some SuperAttic™ customers have to say about this product:

Larry: Hey Ralph, how are you doing?

Ralph Carpinella; SuperAttic™ Customer:

Ralph: How are you?

Larry: Nice to see you.

Ralph: Same here Larry.

Larry: How has the house been since we did the SuperAttic™ job?

Ralph: Well it had been so much better its unbelievable!

Larry: Really, well let's go outside and take a look at the temperature of your roof. This is one of the hottest days of the year so it's a great time to look at the temperature in the attic.

Ralph: You don't have to convince me about it.

Larry: Let's see what the temperature is in the middle of the roof, look at that it's a 178˚.

Ralph: Oh my God!

Larry: Yeah and normally that would make your attic very hot, so let's go take a look. With the SuperAttic™ installed this attic is 82˚ now which is only 10˚ higher than what we wanted on the second floor. Again I have to stress this is the hottest day of the year and our climate rarely gets over 100˚ with today being 103˚ at full sun.

Normally this attic would be absolutely unbearable where no one in their right mind would stand up here for longer than 10 seconds without running for cooler air. It's amazing, with SuperAttic™ you can see your attic is nearly room temperature in the summer and because of this you don't have hot ceilings radiating heat into your lower rooms which makes your home much more comfortable. Also the air conditioning system is running far less saving you energy and money while keeping a vented roof with the SuperAttic™ application.

Ralph: It is the most amazing thing in the world keeping it cool and comfortable. Especially on a day like today the second floor would normally get very warm with the air conditioner running 100% of the time. But now whatever temperature you set it at is the temperature it actually is inside so you are saving energy, money and it's a comfortable atmosphere!

Larry: The air conditioner can now keep up.

Ralph: Not only can it keep up but it can rest!

Larry: Okay, here we are at a different home on the same day July 22nd its 100˚ and this home doesn't have SuperAttic™. Again it's a hot day, the sun is shining and the temperature of this homes roof is reaching up to 157˚.

Wow, we are now in the attic and it's really unbearable my cameraman is sweating his head off and so am I! It is actually 120˚ in this attack with a temperature reading of 143˚ at the roof deck and the roofing is at 160˚.

So now there's this heat radiating down into the attic, heating up all the ducts, the air conditioning unit and the ceilings. It's amazing how hot this a/c unit is to the touch and to think we are trying to produce cold air inside of it.

Looking at the supply duct that's suppose to be taking cold air throughout all the rooms where we want cool air and the outside of that supply duct we get a temperature reading of 123˚, when we are suppose to have 55˚ air inside of the duct. It makes absolutely no sense to put ducts in unconditioned spaces with a hostile environment such as this and in the winter it's exactly the opposite. In the winter the furnace will try to produce hot air while blowing through ducts that are in a freezing cold attic while losing heat before it ever reaches the room we intend to warm. So again putting ducts in unconditioned spaces or hostile attics makes absolutely no sense. However, the SuperAttic™ will solve this problem for you!

Andrew and Elaine Kokes; SuperAttic™ Customers:

Elaine: The very next morning after Dr. Energy Saver came in and did the work on the home we noticed a huge difference in just the overall temperature inside with it being even pretty much everywhere. It wasn't freezing in one room and hot in another anymore, so we were really pleased!

Andrew: When I get up in the morning I will check the temperature in the home and it will read 64˚, I then go outside and its 57˚, by 10 or 11:00 its 65˚ outside while its still 64˚ inside. With out it changing I can tell you its now holding its temperature.

Larry: The big energy story with homes is that in the winter heated air will rise and leak out of the top of the home, in which case every cubic foot of air that leaks out at the top has new air being sucked in at the bottom to replace it and this new air is very cold. So it's actually the outside air making the lower levels of your home very drafty and cold. In the upper levels of the home heat is being lost as air leaks out also when you have the ducts in your attic they are trying to move warm air from the furnace while in a cold environment. You need to also think about when you lose heat in the attic you're warming the bottom of the roof deck, that's now melting snow on the roof and in return causing it to make ice which is very damaging and can be very destructive.

Andrew and Elaine: Having SuperAttic™ in the attic will now make it nearly room temperature without purposely heating it and that's absolutely amazing! With this application we have far less air leakage, have an air tight cap at the top of the home and will leave the second floors very comfortable. There are now very little drafts because we no longer have any air leakage and you can feel the difference in our first floors as well as our basement!
